A product I never thought I would need, now a product I never leave without.
There are folding saws and then there a silky folding saws. A product I never really gave much time, I always carried a hatchet and a bigger splitting axe so I though I didn’t have much need (or thought I didn’t) for a folding saw. That was until I got to take one out and see what i thought of it or had any use for it.
The first time I took it out was a quiet overnighter I didn’t take much because it was a quick trip and we were not going really anywhere to far away. Little effort was needed to make a fire because we didnt need it big it was not cold just need to boil the billy and heat up a BBQ stand. I honestly didn’t use it that much for the small fire I made because it was mainly just shrub and small already broken branches that i used (If it was cold or we needed an excess of wood for a couple of days it would of been a different story).
This made me still under the impression that I didn’t really need to carry it with me (I had the silky bigboy saw with me). It was not until I was leaving camp that there was a few branches over the dirt road we came in on, not a full tree but a couple of big branches (to heavy and inconvenient to drag or move). I hate it when people drive around or over without moving or trying to move the tree, so as I normally would I got out and grabbed my splitting axe and hatchet (for smaller branches) thinking I would make short work of it.
I started out hacking but as this was a fresh green tree it was taking a bit longer it would have been about 10” in diameter. After only a few swings of the axe I remembered that I had the Sliky bigboy in the car, so whipped it out and though what a great chance to see if this thing is as good a it looks. Started off on some smaller branches about 3”-4” in diameter it ate them up.
Being a pull saw (meaning it only cut on the pull stroke) it required far less energy than swinging a big axe or even the small hatchet as well (also far quicker). As it seemed to make very short work of the smaller branches I though may as well try it on the brunt of the log and sure enough cut through that quick smart. I was so impressed with this little silky saw that now I never got anywhere without it. and have actually gone and got a few more. one for the pack (Silky Gomboy or Bigboy) and they got one for the 4wd upgraded to the massive Katanaboy.
I drive a lot of dirt roads around farmland and bush land that are lined with trees. There have been countless times w
here branches have fallen on the road and I have dragged them off wishing I had my chainsaw in the car. Not only to make it smaller so no one has a crash but also to take home some firewood also. Now by having a Silky Saw living in the back of the car (the katanaboy) means I can now clear the roads and make them safer quick and with exerting minimal energy.
Whether it is like that overnighter, small hike or a weeklong 4wd trip the silky comes with me everywhere. It lives in the 4wd and only comes out to go into my pack for hiking trips.
