When making a Benchmade knife, it goes through 8 primary stages:

  • Laser Cutting – large sheet of steel has blanks laser cut out of it, the blanks are removed and measured to ensure that they meet Benchmade’s high standards
  • Surface Grinding – blanks are ground to the correct width and thickness, before being checked for faults and/or errors in the sizing or measurements, and only the blanks that meet these standards move on to the next stage
  • Blade and Handle Milling – handles and any required grooves are cut using high speed mills, the components are then checked to ensure that they meet Benchmade’s high standards
  • Bevelling – a technician bevels both sides of the blade into the correct shape, one side at a time, before taking measurements to ensure that both sides match perfectly, before moving onto the next stage.
  • Back Sanding – the blade is smoothened with a standing belt sander
  • Finishing – blades are cleaned, polished and any scratches, flaws or blemishes are removed to give the blade a more refined look
  • Assembly – blade is assembled by a technician that ensures all the measurements are correct
  • Sharpening – blade is expertly sharpened by a technician

Throughout the production of a Benchmade product, up to 35 different people can handle the materials used in manufacturing a single knife.
