What are the different uses for machetes?

When you mention the word machete people just think of a large bush knife somewhere in size between a bowie knife and a sword. Machetes have several uses and depending on you use choosing the right machete if you are using it for work is important. Below we will outline a few basic uses and differences.

Brush Cutting

The most common use for machetes is cutting through light vegetation for example overgrown jungle, blackthorn bushes in the bush or simply clearing up overgrown vegetation in the back yard. For this type of application you need a longer machete that is light in weight with a straight edge. Simple as that no rocket science just a blade long enough to cut low to the ground and light in weight so your arms don’t wear out during use. A few machetes we highly recommend for this type of use is the Gerber Senior, Gerber Bolo, Puma XP Bush 23.

Bush Craft

Machetes with a bit of extra weight in the blades are a great tool for outdoor bush craft. If you are outdoors and need to built a temporary structure or shelter you will need to use what fallen branches are around you. If you need to cut poles to size or sharpen the ends of large branches a shorter machete with good weight to it is an ideal tool to have in your kit. A few machetes we recommend for this type of application are the following. Kershaw Camp 12, Gerber Machete Junior, Bear Grylls Compact parang, Silky Nata.

Bushel Cutting

In certain outdoor areas you will find a lot of light vegetation that when strapped together can be used to make a watertight roof on a structure. this small type vegetation can be placed in a bushel and cut in bulk to make the task easier. Also certain types of light vegetation like corn, wheat, sugarcane can also be harvested by hand and the following types of machetes are suitable for the job. Gerber Kukri, Gerber machete pro, Silky Yoki.

What makes a machete a unique tool?

Machetes are unique tools that serve multiple purposes. They are versatile and can be used as both a cutting tool and a weapon. Machetes have a broad blade that is ideal for chopping and slicing through dense vegetation, making them invaluable for clearing brush or navigating through jungles and dense forests. They are also commonly used in agriculture for harvesting crops and cutting through tough plants. Due to their durability, affordability, and ease of use, machetes have become popular tools among survivalists, outdoor enthusiasts, and farmers alike. The distinct design and functionality of machetes make them an essential tool in various situations where a sharp and reliable cutting instrument is required.
